Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline: Healing Day by Day

Patience is the Key to Perfection

Rhinoplasty (a nose job) is one of the most transformative facial surgeries, but unlike a haircut, the results aren't instantaneous. The nose is a delicate structure of bone, cartilage, and skin, and it heals at its own pace.

The First 24-48 Hours

What you'll experience: You will wake up with a cast or splint on the outside of your nose and possibly packing inside. You will feel congested, as if you have a severe cold. Bruising around the eyes (the "raccoon" look) and swelling are completely normal.
What to do: Keep your head elevated at all times (even while sleeping), apply cold compresses around your eyes (not directly on the nose), and take your prescribed medication.

1 Week Post-Op

The Milestone: This is usually when you return to the clinic to have the cast and any sutures removed.
What you'll see: You will get your first glimpse of your new nose! However, it will still appear swollen, and the tip may feel numb or stiff. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work or social activities with makeup to cover any residual bruising.

2 to 4 Weeks Post-Op

The Progress: Most of the obvious, visible swelling resolves during this period. Your breathing will improve significantly if structural airway work was done.
What to avoid: You can resume light cardiovascular exercise, but you must avoid contact sports, heavy lifting, or wearing glasses resting on the bridge of your nose.

3 to 6 Months Post-Op

The Refinement: The numbness in the tip of your nose will begin to fade. The nose continues to refine its shape, and the subtle details of the surgery become more apparent. The swelling is mostly completely gone, except perhaps for the very tip of the nose, which holds onto fluid the longest.

1 Year Post-Op

The Final Result: By the one-year mark, all subtle swelling has dissipated, the tissues have settled, and you are seeing the final, permanent result of your rhinoplasty. For some patients with thicker skin or complex revision surgeries, full tip refinement can take up to 18-24 months.
